This component consists of pistons that are used to push air into an insulated block on each car's wheels via a series of tubing that is routed through the car's floor. This allows the train to apply the brake and stop quickly. The second component is what we commonly know today as the pneumatic locomotive. Utilizing this new technology, all of the cars on a train could be stopped by a single reason, not by hand as before. This new technology allowed trains to save fuel and time because there was no need for the many people required to apply the brake previously. Westinghouse's invention continued to evolve and help save millions of lives across the United States and millions more around the world each year since its inception in 1869. The benefits of pneumatic systems continue to be used by auto manufacturers and transportation companies around the world. The vast number of businesses that make use of these systems is an indication as to how beneficial and useful they are as a result of Westinghouse's vision for the new technology. This article is written based on pneumatic systems as it is known today, which has been around for close to a century.
