Why a movie review on a blog post for a detective novel? When you can't get enough of the Hollywood blockbuster, but want something different. Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!, starring Sushant Singh Rajput, still has that je ne sais quoi that is undeniably interesting. It has become an Indian summer blockbuster and might end up one of the more popular films of 2015. And it's not hard to see why - from its beautifully written screenplay to its brilliant cast and beautifully haunting background score, this film will have you hooked from beginning to end. Set in Kolkata during the Second World War, the movie is an adaptation of most of the stories from the first Byomkesh Bakshy novel by legendary Indian author Sharadindu Bandopadhyay. The common thread that runs through all these stories remains Byomkesh (Sushant Singh Rajput), a genius yet ruthless young private detective who, aided by his assistants Ajit (Anand Tiwari) and Satyaki (Dipankar De), is trying to solve mysteries. The two assistants in the movie also aid Byomkesh in solving the mysteries that he is involved with. Ajit is usually seen with Byomkesh and Satyaki keep a secret diary of their adventures which they tell to Byomkesh while they are out on a case. The movie does a great job of bringing together all these stories about a very unique detective, and manages to include bits from all the other stories while keeping the film's focus on its own protagonist. The other movies that Sushant has been in before this one, "Piku" and "Finding Fanny" have been somewhat hit or miss, but definitely somewhere between passable and average. But with "Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!" he definitely seems to have found his niche. His acting in the movie is superb and that, combined with the chemistry between him and his two assistants, ensures that this movie does not disappoint in any way. The movie is very well crafted, paying attention to every detail (the historical accuracy of the costumes and props, the beautiful back drops or Kolkata). Whether you like or dislike bollywood movies (or even Indian movies in general), this one will be an exception. It has all the elements to make it a truly entertaining experience; humor, romance, action and well-paced plot development (you never feel like it's dragging on).
